SUMMARY:Earth Day Restoration Work Party
DESCRIPTION:Earth Day Restoration Work Party\n« All Events \n\nTuesday\, April 22\nat\n10:00 am\n–\n1:00 pm \nThe Friends of San Pedro Valley Park will once again celebrate Earth Day with a restoration work party. This year\, it will take place on the actual commemorative Earth Day\, which is Tuesday\, April 22nd. And it will again be a rescue day for the plants in our beloved\, but neglected\, Native Plant Garden\, as we go after removing the usual suspects of invasive plants\, weeds and plant debris. We may also be planting some natives to enhance the garden and help bring it back to its former healthy and well-tended appearance. This year’s event will take place from 10 am until 1 pm at the Visitor Center. Just bring your gloves and your sun hats… we’ll supply the tools and the knee pads! The two areas comprising the SPVP Native Plant Garden are ambassadors for the wild and wonderful biodiversity of our park\, so we need to have the plants be able to show themselves at their best for our visitors. We hope you can join us for this annual celebration of the native plant life in this\, our tiny corner of the planet. And the Friends would also like to get to know more of the folks who\, like us\, will choose to help refresh a garden that welcomes native pollinators: bees\, butterflies\, beetles and others – a tiny microcosm of our struggling-to-be-healthy Planet Earth. \n\n\nAdd to calendar \n \n\nGoogle Calendar\niCalendar\nOutlook 365\nOutlook Live\n\n\n\n\nTrail Work Day

SUMMARY:Elephant Seal Research at Año Nuevo Reserve - Speaker: Dr. Patrick Robinson
DESCRIPTION:Elephant seal research at Año Nuevo Reserve – Speaker: Dr. Patrick Robinson\n« All Events \nSaturday\, April 5\nat\n7:00 pm\n–\n8:00 pm \nOn Saturday\, April 5\, 2025\, at 7 pm\, the Friends of San Pedro Valley Park are pleased to welcome Dr. Patrick Robinson\, the Director of Año Nuevo Reserve. On a Zoom webinar\, he will present his lecture entitled “Elephant seal research at Año Nuevo Reserve: a life of extremes.” Año Nuevo Reserve has been home to UC Santa Cruz’s elephant seal research program for the past 50 years. During this time\, researchers have led pioneering studies on fasting physiology\, at-sea behavior\, diving physiology\, habitat associations\, and demography. Elephant seals give us a glimpse into the open ocean mesopelagic zone – a region that is poorly understood but is home to some of the most abundant fish species. The seals live a life of extremes by migrating thousands of kilometers each year\, diving to depths that can exceed 1\,700 meters\, and holding their breath for nearly two hours. Join Patrick in a discussion of the research projects that led to these incredible discoveries. \nJoin us by registering below! \n\nRegister Now\n \nWebsite:\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_bAMqj7z9ScSDhosVkQpM9w\n\n\nAdd to calendar \n \n\nGoogle Calendar\niCalendar\nOutlook 365\nOutlook Live\n\n\n\n\nHabitat Restoration \n\nEarth Day Restoration Work Party

SUMMARY:Pollination\, Seeds\, and Fruits
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, March 2nd at 7 pm\, the Friends of San Pedro Valley Park welcome back our good friend\, J.R. Blair\, for a springtime lecture on Pollination\, Seeds\, and Fruits.  The transfer of pollen\, containing the male reproductive cells of a plant\, to the female part (typically) of another plant\, is integral to the reproduction of seed-bearing plants.  In his presentation\, J.R. Blair will discuss the ways that flowers get pollinated\, how seed and fruit form\, and how varied plant adaptations have evolved for seed dispersal to occur.  We owe so much of our food to pollination\, which occurs due to birds\, insects\, butterflies\, rodents\, and bats seeking nectar.  Tune in for a fascinating lecture. \n \nAbout the Speaker:  J.R. Blair received his bachelor’s degree at the Evergreen State College in Olympia\, Washington and obtained his master’s degree at San Francisco State University in 1999 studying with the accomplished mycologist\, Dr. Dennis Desjardin. His thesis was Fungi Associated with Arctostaphylos in Northern California. Since then\, he has been an active member of the Mycological Society of San Francisco. He served a two-year term as President and was Fungus Fair chairperson for five years. He has taught mushroom identification workshops for mycological societies and outdoor education programs for many years. He was a lecturer of biology at SFSU for 21 years and the director of the University’s Sierra Nevada Field Campus for eleven years until his retirement in December 2020.  \nTo participate in this Webinar\, please register in advance using the following link: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_nqfqj_RsTzq_eYaPZemUMw \nJust enter your name and email address to register.  You will then get a confirmation email with further instructions\, as well as reminder emails at one week and one day to prior the date of the event.

SUMMARY:Return of the Engineer
DESCRIPTION:Please join us via Zoom on Saturday\, February 3rd at 7 pm for an informative discussion about the return of the beaver to our present day environment.  Europeans decimated the beaver population in North America by the end of the 1800s.  They hunted the animal for its water-resistant fur\, used felted beaver fur for hats\, and used castoreum in making perfumes.  Heidi Perryman will discuss the return of beavers (Castor canadensis) to our landscape\, what it means to our creeks and infrastructure\, biodiversity\, and resilience to climate change.  Even if it is possible\, is it beneficial to coexist with an animal that can chew down the landscaping we use tax dollars to plant?  Is there any value to sharing our streams with a creature that can block culverts and flood roads? Tune in and let’s find out. \nTo participate in this Webinar\, please register in advance using the following link:  \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_07uuvkIgRl-69kloST4qvw \nAbout the speaker:  Heidi Perryman\, Ph.D.\, is a child psychologist who became an accidental beaver advocate when she started filming the beavers that showed up in her hometown in 2006. She served on the beaver subcommittee and started the organization “Worth A Dam” to advocate for their safety and educate others about their value in the watershed. Heidi organized the first beaver festival in 2008 an annual event which has since become one of the largest nature festivals in northern California. She has been particularly interested in the way that the beavers’ struggle has connected residents more closely to their environment\, to their city government and to each other.

SUMMARY:The Spectacular Plant Diversity of San Pedro Valley Park
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, January 13th at 7 pm\, the Friends of San Pedro Valley Park are pleased to welcome Morgan Stickrod to describe for us “The Spectacular Plant Diversity of San Pedro Valley Park.”  Home to over 350 species of vascular plants\, the ~1\,052 acres of San Pedro Valley Park host an impressive diversity of plants and habitats\, many of which are quite rare and have distributions barely exceeding the boundaries of the park. San Pedro Mountain and adjacent Montara Mountain form the northern spur of the Santa Cruz Mountains and share a floristic affinity with the coastal mountains extending to the south. San Pedro Mountain also contains traces of the formerly expansive Franciscan flora. The rich mosaic of biodiversity that characterizes the landscape has much to do with a fascinating geologic history\, as well as a dynamic interplay of climatic and ecological processes. These factors will be considered as we explore the maritime chaparral\, coastal scrub\, riparian\, coastal grassland habitats of the park\, with emphasis on the fascinating flora and plant communities associated with them.  Please join us via Zoom for this fascinating lecture.  \nAbout the Speaker:  Morgan Stickrod is currently the Senior Botanist at Sol Ecology. He is a botanist and plant ecologist with over 10 years of experience doing research and field work throughout California\, the southeastern United States\, Mexico\, and South America. He completed his MS at San Francisco State University\, where his research focused on floristics\, dispersal dynamics\, and rare plant management within the Suisun Marsh estuarine complex. Recently\, he has also been involved in research projects studying groups such as manzanitas (Arctostaphylos spp.)\, mariposa lilies (Calochortus spp.)\, CFP endemic thistles (Cirsium spp.) and chaparral pea (Pickeringia montana). In recent years\, he also worked for SFPUC\, doing rare plant management work throughout the San Francisco Peninsula watershed and Santa Cruz Mountains. He has also done consulting and floristic work throughout much of California\, including vegetation mapping of Southeast Farallon Island\, floristics of San Pedro Valley\, and numerous rare plant mapping projects in areas such as the Klamath Mountain region\, the Sierra Nevada\, and the Mojave Desert. \nTo participate in this Webinar\, please register in advance using the following link: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_ltQ6qJgqSTulnMbW0Or87g \nEnter your name and email address to register.  You will then get a confirmation email with further instructions and reminder emails closer to the event.

SUMMARY:The Importance of Islands to Avian Evolution
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of San Pedro Valley Park welcome master birder Bob Lewis\, who will present a lecture via Zoom on Saturday\, September 16th\, 2023 at 7 pm entitled “The Importance of Islands to Avian Evolution.”  \nIslands play a key role in both the evolution of new avian species and the extinction of others.  Because of their isolation\, birds that arrive on islands evolve separately from their parent group and eventually become unique… thus a new species is born!  But that isolation also makes them vulnerable to threats like hurricanes\, volcanoes\, rising seas\, and introduced diseases or predator species.  Although over 80 percent of bird species live on continents\, 92 percent of extinctions since 1500 have been on islands.   \nJoin us to view some marvelous island species and learn about the conservation \nissues unique to islands.  Please register using the following link:   \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_44IqjQJ0T3qNT9EN1VAu9g \nAbout the speaker:  Robert Lewis is a master birder who trained as a chemist and worked in the energy field for 33 years.  He has taught birding classes in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 25 years (Birds of the Bay Area\, Avian Evolution\, Master Birding\, etc.) and served as adult education chair on the board of Golden Gate Audubon.  He was honored with the American Birding Association Chandler Robins Award for Conservation and Education in 2016\, and Golden Gate Audubon’s Paul Covel Award for Education in 2017.  His life list is over 5000 and he loves to talk about birds.  He is an award-winning photographer\, focusing on birds\, and he is extremely busy having resumed his worldwide trips.

SUMMARY:Kelp Forest Ecology\, Management\, and Restoration in California
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of San Pedro Valley Park welcome Shelby Kawana\, an Environmental Scientist with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife\, who will present a lecture via Zoom on Saturday\, May 13th at 4 pm entitled “Kelp Forest Ecology\, Management and Restoration in California.”  California’s iconic canopy-forming kelp forests are a critical resource and ecosystem engineer. Kelp forests provide structural habitat\, shelter\, and food for hundreds of marine organisms\, including important local fisheries.  Kelp forests face several environmental stressors which can operate independently or synergistically to cause localized kelp declines and\, in some cases\, widespread deforestation.  This presentation will discuss marine algae resource management in California and the collaborative efforts exploring various restoration approaches aimed to facilitate kelp recovery along the coast. \n \nAbout the Speaker:  Shelby Kawana is an Environmental Scientist with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s (CDFW) Marine Region\, working primarily on kelp restoration and management. Shelby grew up abalone diving in the bull kelp forests on the Sonoma and Mendocino County coasts\, which led her to pursue an education in marine science. She obtained her BS in Marine Biology at UC Santa Cruz\, where she was trained as a scientific research diver. Shelby began working for CDFW in 2012 for the Invertebrate Management Program\, where she conducted extensive subtidal monitoring and research to support the management of the northern California recreational red abalone fishery. In addition\, she worked for the UC Davis Endangered White Abalone Captive Breeding and Restoration Program\, conducting active abalone restoration efforts in southern California. Shelby began working in her current position with the CDFW State Managed Finfish and Nearshore Ecosystem Program’s Kelp and Marine Algae Team in 2022. \nPlease register with the following link: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_s69ADz30TJWLjjeCLzTO3w
