San Pedro Creek: Past, Present, and Future

January 13, 2018 at 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm UTC-8

San Pedro Creek Watershed:  What we know about watershed from 20 years of research

Jerry Davis is a Professor of Geography and Environmental Science at San Francisco State University, and a former president of the San Pedro Creek Watershed Coalition.  He specializes in biogeomorphology, and his research looks at the closely interlinked systems that interplay in the watershed:  its geology, landforms, soils, and biotic environments, as well as human impacts on the creek and its hillslopes.  These systems interact in multiple ways – there have also been significant impacts of the natural and built landscape on its residents, including landslides taking out homes and backyards being undercut by slope failures and bank erosion.

Along with students and other faculty at San Francisco State University and members of the watershed coalition, Jerry has been studying this creek and its watershed for about 20 years.  We’ve learned quite a lot about how the creek and its habitats work, and how they relate to the natural and human environment they reside in.  But there’s still a lot to learn.  It’s time to take a look at where we are now, and what we still need to do to understand and restore some of its ecological functions, and in general to learn how we can best live with this unique and important landscape.
